PostSubject: Keiras Dog Training   Thu Feb 19, 2009 4:55 pm

Keira started her training class last night and surprise surprise she was quite good :san12: Its only basic training which if im honest she is quite good at She already knows sit down stay wait which is what we were taught last night The problem i have with her is when there are other animals around she totally ignores me As soon as i got out of the car i thought OMG this is going to be awful because she pulled her halti straight off and was pulling like a train to get thru the door to queue with the other dogs I ended up putting her muzzle on to calm her down :2431: One of the trainers came up to me and asked why the muzzle? I explained that she only needed it to calm down initially and would be fine as soon as we got in the venue and i would take it off which is what i did
Her classmates included a couple of rotties a gsd x a malamute a labrador a sharon osbourne dog (dont know what they are called u no the yappy fluffy one called mini) a collie x and a few x breeds think there was 10 altogether Keira had a rottie next to her and a nasty one opposite so i was expecting the worst :ezcs: The rottie opposite hated the malamute who was used for most of the demonstrations as he was a regular In the end one of the trainers had to take charge of it and try to show the owner how to calm it down :2431: I felt so sorry for the lady who said he wasnt normally aggresive like that Keira was the only dog who already new the down command so i had to go into the middle of the room and demonstrate and she actually listened to me and did it straight away :aq: She was slightly distracted by the other dogs and tried making friends with the rottie next to us a few times but all in all she was very good I certainly felt a lot happier than the last time i took her training They sent us home with a homework sheet we have to practice all the commands for atleast 10 minutes a day Im looking forward to next weeks training now rather than dreading it but knowing Keira she could be a little madam next week Tune in to the next episode on Wednesday :san22:

So glad first night went well. Sounds like Keira is gonna settle in fine, especially if she's already doing demos in front of the class!

PostSubject: Re: Keiras Dog Training   Fri Feb 27, 2009 12:00 am

Keiras second class was a success :san12: She was quite settled and didnt lunge at any of the other dogs I was amazed how calm she was once we had got into the hall There is a rottie that hates the sight of her and was constantly barking and lunging at her all night The trainers even asked if it had ever been attacked by a GSD :san41: It hadnt so dont know what the problem is Mind you saying that quite a few dogs react to GSDs like that for no apparent reason Anyway Keira did not retaliate at all she just looked at the dog wagging her tail and wanted to play She was a star pupil again being the only dog in class that could do the stay down She was a really good girl We also did the recall command using a long line which i thought she would be rubbish at i did think she would try and run towards the other dogs but she came straight to me :xze: A new command i need to practice this week is the stand command ive never used this one so she has been looking at me a bit blank today whenever i say it She knows i want her to do something so she does the sit then down then rollover hoping its one of them :san22: she thinks she gets a treat even when she does the wrong thing I came home feeling well pleased again this week :san23:

PostSubject: Re: Keiras Dog Training   Fri Feb 27, 2009 10:14 am

Brilliant  this is like a little diary, so interesting to read :san50:

I never use the stand command, really, I use the wait, because I only use what we need for them in the 'pet' situation, and what we need. Bryn doesn't go to class anymore, which is a shame, it's only right opposite me, but it's at 8pm on a friday when we are usually doing things together, the hall is tiny, we are on top of each other and they want us to weave through polls, which he is far to big for, walk around and through cones, no room to do it and he would prefer to play with and chew :2431: Zeps fault he used them to wind Bryn up to bring him on when he was training there, worked well, but now he distroys every cone he see's :san42: I think they are glad we stopped going
