would you get your dog hipscored even though you didn't want to use it for breeding , elaine and another girl i know had theirs hipscored just to make sure the dogs hips were ok for working , [ agility, flyball, obedience ] just wondered who else would do it ,

Something we'd like to do - like Judes tho more out of curiosity and then anything else would be dependant upon results.

It would probably depend upon money issues at the time as well cos from what I gather it aint that cheap is it or does that depend upon specific vets?

We had marleys hips and elbows xrayed when he was limpring as they thought it was either hip dysplasia or pano, his hips and elbows were fine but he wasnt scored, the xrays alone were nearly £300

As sue has mentioned, I have had Tess & Sam hipscored. I would also do it in the future for peace of mind more than anything. , but it does help having a good vet that doesnt charge the earth.

Can any vet hip score or does it have to be a specialised vet?

We had Mickeys hips xrayed when he hurt his leg but not hipscored

Id be interested to get it done but wouldnt do it unless he was going to be bred from
To me it would be an unnecessary anaesthetic and wouldnt be worth the risk just out of curiousity

Obviously if he was being worked or trained hard every day that would be different

where we go its done under sedation , you are with your dog all the time except when they go in the xray room, the vet shows you the xrays straight away and even gives you a approximate score, must admit he's been spot on with the 8 that we have taken ,

I have never thought of having Bryn scored but I have thought about x-rays just to have the comfort of knowing what the vet thought, I have never had any reason to be concerned about him so it goes out of my mind to be honest

This is my 'beef' that ANY Vet can lay them out and some of them don't know how to properly. So much so, one either gets the xrays back from the BVA for re x-raying or if not too bad but still not correct WILL score them, so one recieves a DUD score.

You are not supposed to score a dog twice.....hmm! wonder why? Is it because it proves some Vets DON'T or CAN'T lay them out properly! We got a bitch scored and I knew from the xrays the lay was wrong, her left hip was twisted. So we called another Vet (in a different County) and got her done under her 'pet' name! Well, well, well it came back about 25 points under what she had been originally scored as!

I think Vets SHOULD be trained in this department and only when passing an exam or something be allowed to lay out dogs for this, life changing procedure.

We are lucky with our Vet - we don't use our permenant Vet as although he is great for everything else, not for this and they only have a digital machine which the BVA will not accept . The Vet we use for xrays does both hip and elbow together, it takes two hours, the dog is not out for too long so less dangerous AND it only costs £210 in total and this includes the BVA scoring. (We also get all xrays back too so great for comparison between dogs and a ready reckoner)

sorry but i'm confused at this , didn't realize you could have them scored under pet names , on the green paper you have to fill in it asks for dogs kc name and registration number , dams name, sires name, and microchip or tattoo number nothing about pet name ,

I told a fib to the Vet and said she wasn't KC reg. He said that's ok, it doesn't matter if she isn't as hip scoring or any health tests have nothing to do with the Kennel Club! So all we put on the form was her 'pet' name where her KC name should be. The part with parents we just put a pet name for the Dam and unknown for Sire, the tattoo bit we left blank also. The Vet had the attitude that he didn't have much time for the KC anyway, called them a paper pushing organisation who like to think they have the power to 'rule' the dog world! I liked him lol!
I know it was a bit of a con to get it done, but I just knew that the score was wrong and wanted proof that I was right.

In fact, I had done a bit of research prior to asking the Vet to do it by phoning the BVA and they said ANY dog whether pedigree or cross could be done.

i knew that dogs could be done under the working register , the vet we use checks the microchip in the dog and writes the number in himself , unfortunatley a lot of people were taking the same dog with a good score , under different names , i certainly didn't know the bva would score any dog , you learn something new everyday

Yeah I knew that about them taking the same dog with the good scores....thing is they actually didn't do themselves any favours by doing that...pointless really!
I mean you have a dog there, with a false score.....what can you do with him (apart from con people for stud fees) but what can you use him for yourself. You know he is dodgy so you can't incorporate his blood into your lines. Pointless and fraudulant excerise. I never could understand it. Defeats the purpose somewhat.
