    Animal rescue’s
    seasonal appeal

Animal carer Hilary Bradshaw with a rat and a collie dog

Published on Thu Dec 30 12:47:03 GMT 2010

A PET rescue team is desperate for help as they bid to cope with the annual spike in abandoned pets over the festive period.

Paws n Claws is a local organisation
dedicated to the rescue, short term fostering and permanent re-homing of
all types of unwanted animals.Volunteer Hilary Bradshaw insists there isn’t an animal on earth they wouldn’t try to help! She said: “All pet rescue centres see a rise in abandoned pets after Christmas - particularly dogs. It’s heartbreaking.“We’ve got half a dozen foster carers at the moment but they are all full. “We often get foster carers who come forward but then decide that they want to keep pets that they re-home permanently.“We’ve taken all kinds of pets in during the last 18 months, from as far and wide as Bournemouth, Lincoln and Glasgow. “I’ve currently got five dogs and 18 rats. “We’ve taken in spiders too - but dogs and rabbits are the most commonly abandoned pets we see.”Paws
n Claws use a kennel in Ashton in emergencies but prefer to re-home
pets with foster carers who can offer a loving environment and a secure
garden. The volunteer team are also desperate for donations to help them pay the vets bills for all the animals they help.Hilary,
who currently cares for five dogs and 18 rats, added: “Sadly, over
Christmas, a lot of pet owners decide they can’t cope with their pets
anymore or can’t afford the vet fees.“Despite the old saying we see a lot of unwanted dogs at this time of year. “It
can be because of relationship breakdowns, changing work commitments,
moving to unsuitable accommodation, illness or sometimes simply because
of the dog’s age.“But for anyone who wants to be a carer, it’s
important to stress that we will sort out all the expenses. It won’t
cost you a penny.”To make a donation to Paws n Claws, offer a
homeless pet a permanent home or put yourself forward as a short-term
foster carer, go online at: www.pawsnclawsrescue.co.uk
