PostSubject: Biggest Mistake   Tue Feb 10, 2009 3:05 pm

What in all your years of owning a dog was your biggest mistake (that you can see now) with their training?

Mine was allowing Hazel to dig in the garden :2222: that's why we have no lawn anymore and prob won't have again!

When we first moved in here, Gazi enclosed the garden, it was a mess, so was the house, we were so busy with the house, I really didn't have much worry about the garden, and never told Hazel off for it, anyway she stopped digging soon after puppyhood, about a year later, I forgot all about her digging :2431: and we made beds and spent a fortune in the garden centre, had it all planted up, looking pretty, only to return home one day, to the whole garden distroyed :2431:

my bigges mistake was keep training my lab for obenience contests when I knew he had a small tumor in the brain...the vet said it was okey, but he or I didn`t know it was growing...untill one day it broke and he went crazy (almost bit my sis ears off).. He died few hour later... If I had been sane...I would have put him to sleep when we found out that he had a tumor... then saved my sis for many surgerys...

    A mistake I won`t do again

My biggest mistake with Marley was letting him chew the tubes of cardboard off the finshed kitchen roll. I left one on the bench by accident and when I came home he's chewed off all the ktchen roll and spat it out all over the ktchen floor and he brought the cardboard tube to me lookng as proud as punch!! :2445:

The biggest mistake i ever made was to change my trainning method and start to use the purley possitive method, it's never worked with any of my working dogs, they used to push and push, and as far as letting a habbit extingwish it's self it only got worse, maybe it was something i did, but reverting back to my old way of training turns out the results i want, now i stick to what i know works, even with the changing times, my motto is
If it aint broke don't try to fix it

Mine is allowing Chloe to feed them from the table. Now we have to shut them out when we eat.

Went to a show on Sunday and my friends two dogs sat next to an open box of sandwiches & took absolutely no notice of them. Mine would have sat staring into my eyes & then at the box longingly until I admitted defeat!!

ehhhh my biggest training mistakes have been allowing the family to take part in paddys training they undid everything :2431: he was a amazing gundog too lol

no my biggest mistake would be...... i think not getting my dogs out to comps and doing more like that as i worked them we never had time for the fun side

but i make mistakes in training everyday it wat i learn from how i expand my knowledge

i too agree with you helan the purley posative does not work with any of my workers ke sits there sticking two fingers up at me wen i try that approch :2431: :san42:

Purely positive does nothing for Mimi besides get her all excited and silly then she doesnt listen. She likes a stern voice or she ignores everything.

Maggie is the opposite, you talk to her sternly, she just looks at you :2445:

My biggest mistake was taking Mimi to the GSD class, she just doesnt respond to the sort of training they do and I lost confidence in myself for awhile as she wouldnt listen to me. Looking back, that could well have something to do with her age and hormones too so I might take her back and see what happens.

So far Maggie has been the perfect pup so I'm waiting for the mistake to show itself with her and its probably gonna be huge when it does :2445:

my dogs are odd pups very responcive and loves clicker training but wen he was young and would try and attack me clicker training really wasnt the way to go i had to get physical ke on the other hand will not listen if your too tough or too soft you have to be inbetween and quite regamented with her
paddy is a typical lab and works more off body laungage anyway and is amazing very much like rostam but with out the attitude lol
