PostSubject: DRIVER RUNS OVER BOY'S DOG AND SPEEDS OFF    Fri Oct 15, 2010 1:29 pm

A COLD-hearted driver ran over a boy’s dog, checked his car for damage and then sped off, leaving the pet to die in its tearful owner’s arms.

Josh King, 12, had been taking his cocker spaniel Ozzie for an evening walk in fields near his home. He was about to put Ozzie back on his lead when the dog suddenly darted into the road and was hit by a dark-green Citroen car.

The driver, a man in his 50s, ignored Josh’s tears and only got out to check for damage to his car before he raced away.
Now Josh’s family have set up a Facebook page headed Find The Man That Ran Down And Killed Our Ozzie. It already has more than 250 followers.
Josh’s mother Mandy, 40, said: “Josh said the sound the impact made was like a gun shot and it could be heard a few streets away. Ozzie collapsed in Josh’s arms and started shaking. That’s when he looked up at the driver and shouted ‘help me, please, help me’ and waved him towards him.
“But the driver just looked at him, got back in the car and drove off. He said nothing to him. Josh was in floods of tears and Ozzie died in his arms.”
The crash happened on Sunday evening in Malvern, Worcs. Mrs King, who has three other young children, said she does not blame the car driver for hitting Ozzie. But she said she could not believe he did not stop to help her son after the accident.
She added: “It is just heartbreaking. Josh is really struggling, he isn’t eating, doesn’t want to go out and play with his friends, and can’t face going to school. “It makes me cry to just think about it.” Police have recovered the car’s bumper and light casing and have urged the driver to come forward.

West Mercia Police community support officer Steve Freeman, who was called to the scene, said: “This was obviously a very distressing and traumatic experience for the boy involved, and his family.
“We would appeal for the driver of the car, thought to be a man in his 50s, to contact police. We would also appeal for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.”
By law, anyone running over a dog, even if it is not killed, should stop and report the accident to the police. This must be done within 24 hours.
