PostSubject: Getting to Leave/Drop   Thu Jan 08, 2009 7:01 pm

I have always had problems with getting Marley to give a toy (or anything he gets his mouth around) up
With advice from many people all saying to train with treats I decided to give it a go today. With a handful of treats today I threw his ball, he came running back with it dropped it at my feet and was rewarded, Excellent I thought I'd cracked it.......until I ran out of treats, he went running for his ball brought it back to me, sniffed my hand and wouldnt leave go!!!
Any advice, he is so cunning!

the retreve is more then one exercise really so does take a lot of work i wont go into the ins and outs hun as you just want help lol

i wouldnt play fetch with him off lead untill hes spot on, wat i would do is perfect it in the house first and always on lead so he cant run off with his toy ect and learn its more rewarding to be away from you

so put a lead on him have two toys * balls on ropes are great* throw the toy run with him then wen he picks up the toy run backwards hand out and saying fetch fetch take the rope have a lil gentle game of tuggy show him the other toy wave it around ect he will drop the one in his mouth and throw the one in you hand do this a couple of times and wen hes really up for it STOP take the toys and out them away and do this then progess.

with the treats once you run out take the toy and dont allow him to have it my dogs learn its fun to bring things to me as we play i will post a clip of Rostam as a pup doing search work and show you how we play ect.
marley doesnt understand properly but will come does this make sence?

always have treats available to get the leave never chase him if he has something either xxx

im glad hun its just hes learned that it is more rewarding to not give you the toy, so make it the best thing ever i learned this after having paddy my lab as he was a bastard at bringing his game back lol

so i had to run away with my arm out behind me and he would slamm it in my hand

rostam wouldnt give his prey up and would attack you if you tried so i had to clicker train him and now i put my hand out he flys at me took a LOT of work mind will try and video it and show ya xx

awwww thanks for asking hun

well to be honest its so so, he's great as long as he knows theres something in it for him, he will give up as long as he will get a treat for it but if he cant sniff out a tasty treat he hangs onto it!!! :san54:
