i got my 2 youngest a rabbit each (dwarf rabbits) there isn't too much involvement in keeping them happy, and you can train them to live indoors if you want or they can live in an indoor cage and can be exercised outdoors in a rabbit run/chicken coop,i think it gives them a sense of responsibility along with teaching them how to properly care for an animal.but you don't want to get something with too much responsibility as if the novelty wears off (even if it doesn't) it's ultimately your responsibility to look after whatever you choose to get. A kitten is also a nice choice but it can be quite upsetting if they wander off and not come home, but then again you have hens etc so that might not be a good idea. how about a hamster or guinea pig? have you asked him what he would like? xx
