The trick is to do it small. Take what you have just now and do it and then expand as the area fills that way you wont have loads of blank areas as yopu wait for plants to grow.

Before you buy anything look at the final height and width that will give you an idea of where best to put it.

I dont do bedding plants i do annuals and i tend to plant things and then leave then to nature.

I use a lot of foliage in my garden to create colour and i mix decidous with evergreen so you have colour in your garden all year round.

REd maples and beeach are good but they loose their leaves so plant them beside dwarf conifers in gold and yellows to really give maximum impact when they are all out. I love peony and its great for ground cover and beautiful to look at but it dies away so mix it with snow in summer another great ground covering plant but once its in it spreads like wild fire and its lovely silvery leaves are all year round.

Mix little patches of bulbs through as well so you have colour in the spring then that will die away and your summer plants will kick in.

Hope this helps... I could try and do you a paper one if you want but i tend to visit the garden centre find things i like and then place them. High things at the back / middle and smaller all around.

Im rubbish i just know what i like. I dont do a lot of flowery stuff like roses i prefer to use leaves and structure like coryline for tall straight leaves mixed with spirea which is bushy with small leaves. IT does flower but i prefer the foliage.
Conifers are great for height and all year round cover.
Peris or forest flame is fab for striking red new growth in the spring and delicate white flowers in the summer and it doesnt lose its leaves. REd maples are my favourite i love the red delicate leaves its just a pity they shed their leaves. Silver birch is also good you can pick them up in verges etc but you need to put them in a pot to bind the roots.

Bottoms im rabbiting on again... sorry !
