PostSubject: male dog while female in season....?   Mon Apr 05, 2010 8:47 am

First time we have owned a male dog we have always only had females!  Milly has been in season for 2 weeks now and puppydog hasn't bothered with her....until yesterday, he keeps licking her backend and trying to mount her, I know nothing has happened as milly is always around my feet and when pup tries it on we tell him to go to bed!!
Sleeping arrangements...puppydog sleeps in the kitchen and milly comes to bed with us, last night we were up and down all night as pup was continuously howling, he has never done this before, is it because milly is in season??  We were wondering if she should go to the mother in laws until her season has stopped, any help guys??
or is it as simple as him doing a mating call??

    Thanks :)

Will be a full time board nut soon as internet is getting put in tomorrow yayyyy

Yes hun,the howling is definately because she is in season
and she must be at her peak time if your pup is howling,so be extra
carefull. If its at all possible for someone else to have the bitch at this time
then that would make it easier all round and your pup would settle down again
he is only acting as nature intended him to.How old is he.?

She could go to the mother in laws but she goes away soon so it would only be for a couple of days, we going to get a babygate for the kitchen for now so he can't follow her around! He's 1 and a half and she's 4!! He did try and mount her yesterday and did the humping movement but was nowhere near her female bits as she is tiny and he is huge! But hasn't happened since as I've kept them apart as best as possible!

I would watch them like a hawk at all times and if you have to go out
put them in seperate rooms. The baby gate wont stop him,i have known dogs
to chew through solid doors to get to a bitch. Its nature, they cant help it.

Yeah, milly doesn't leave my side when I'm in the house, its not often there is noone in the house usually always someone in but when we go out pup is locked in the kitchen and milly has the hall and backroom!

Feel soo sorry for pup though lol, like I said this is the first male dog we have had so its all new to us! OH said if he don't pack it in he's slamming the 2 bricks together loll (just to note he was joking lol)

Thinking about getting milly done this year.....I take it when she's been done we won't have any of this?

you should not even allow him close enough to sniff and lick her back end thats whats making him worse (tasting).
even though she is always with you when in house(she will be ready to mate to)as he is howling she is ready to stand .
If he is close enough when trying to mount her and manages (telling him to goto bed will not work)

    Thanks for the replies guys!
well MIL couldnt have milly after all so we have had a gate up at the kitchen so pup cant get to milly, surprised he hasnt jumped over the gate but he has been a perfect pooch, Since he hasnt been able to get near milly he hasnt been howling at night so OH is back in bed rather than downstairs with him, hes not as fussy about 'getting' to her now.
The backdoor is through the kitchen so when milly needs to go out for a pee we get puppy to lie/stay in his bed and heel walk milly through the kitchen round the otherside of puppy out into the yard and same again back!
Cant believe how laid back he is being about it, should of done this sooner, so thank you everyone for your help!

milly wasnt licking constant like she normally is when we got up this morning so wiped her with a bit of tissue, and she's not in season any more! so thought ill let puppy in with her today, he went over for a smell, she tucked her tail under her butt and sat down then give puppy a little growl puppy went back to bed sighing, things are back to normal, so hopefully when i have finished the silly amount of things i have to do today ill beable to take her for a walk, finally!!
