Teen in animal cruelty case should be named
    Feb 10 2010

    Liverpool Echo

    TODAY
the ECHO has published a disturbing story relating to a Merseyside
teenager who faces jail after committing sickening acts of animal cruelty.
In the belief that it would have deterred potential
offenders, while also reassuring the community that justice had been
done, we wanted to identify the Kirkby 17-year-old,
who is two months away from his 18th birthday.
We also argued that giving our readers this basic information was in the public interest.
Unfortunately, our application was turned down by chairwoman of the bench Katherine
Pye, who said: “If the offender is identified, it could potentially damage him.”
This decision, we would respectfully suggest, is baffling.
The only “damage” involved in this case was the fatal damage which was
meted out after packs of dogs were set on defenceless animals, which
were then ripped apart. Our arguments were sound and
responsible – unlike the teenager who knew exactly what he was doing,
but has found himself being protected by a misguided legal judgement.

Each case, we accept, should be judged on its merits, but we would strongly
argue that the naming of this individual could have been a powerful deterrent.
But what deterrent is there now, when similar cowards consider carrying out the same kind of vile crimes in the future?
This teenager encouraged the torture and killing of a fox cub and family cat and then filmed and revelled in the dying animals’ suffering.
He is fully accountable for his actions and does not deserve to be able to hide behind a protective shield of anonymity.
