PostSubject: Essex police dogs bought with criminals' seized money   Wed Feb 03, 2010 2:27 pm

Money seized from criminals has been used to buy
three police dogs which will be trained to search for cash, guns and
    drugs in Essex.
The county's police force bought the
13-week-old springer spaniels called Gizmo, Oso and Dibley using money
seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The £2,000 will also be used to train the recruits, who are all brothers. "It seemed a good use of the money. Not only does crime not pay - it can bite you back," said a police spokeswoman. The Proceeds of Crime Act gives judges power to order the seizure of cash generated by crime.
    Eager to learn
Insp Lousie Beattie from the dog section put in a bid to the force's
financial investigation section for some money to be spent on puppies. The puppies, who were bred from kennel club champions, were named by the dog breeder's children. Gizmo, Oso and Dibley were picked because they were boisterous and eager to learn, a police spokeswoman said. The
three have been living with their handlers - Gizmo with Sgt Neil
Phimister, Oso with Pc Mark Watts and Dibley with Insp Louise Beattie. The dogs have completed their basic training and are now on a six-week course. Once that is finished, they will start working and learn on the job.
