PostSubject: Four-year-old boy killed by dog   Mon Nov 30, 2009 11:33 am

a four-year-old boy has been mauled to death by a dog at the family home in Liverpool. The child was attacked at the property in Ashgrove, Wavertree, just after midnight. A
63-year-old woman was also injured and is being treated in hospital. It
is believed she was hurt as she separated the dog from the child. Merseyside Police said armed officers killed the animal in the front garden of the house. Dog handlers and armed response officers attended the scene and an investigation has begun. Efforts are continuing to identify the dog's breed.
    'Agitated state'
ChSupt Steve Ashley said: "This is a tragic incident and a full and
thorough investigation will be carried out into the circumstances
surrounding this young boy's death. "Officers are with the family and our sympathies are with them at this time." He added: "Of utmost importance in such incidents is the safety of the public and of police officers. "When
officers arrived at the address the dog was in an agitated state in the
front garden of the property and was deemed to be a danger to the
public. "As a result we were left with no other option but to have the animal destroyed quickly and humanely." The
attack comes nearly three years after the death of Ellie Lawrenson, a
five-year-old killed by her uncle's pit bull terrier on New Year's Day
2007, just a few miles away in St Helens.

heard about this early this morning

Headteacher pays tribute to John-Paul Massey killed by family dog in Liverpool
    Nov 30 2009
    By Ben Turner
TODAY John-Paul Massey's headteacher described him as "such a friendly, cheerful little boy" who loved life.
    Michael
Hennessey said the four-year-old had only been a pupil at St Clare's
primary school nursery in Wavertree since September but in his short
time had made a huge impression and "was very popular among all the
    children."
On hearing of John-Paul’s death, staff and
pupils fought back tears when the children were told the news in a
    stunned assembly hall this morning.
The 52 nursery children will now be offered extra counselling and support as they try to comprehend their friend’s death.
    Paying
his own poignant tribute, Mr Hennessey said his last memory of
John-Paul singing carols for a school Christmas CD is one he will
    always cherish.
He said: "It was Tuesday last week when we
were recording the carols and I remember seeing him sitting in the hall
singing along so enthusiastically. It was this memory I shared with the
    children this morning.
"He was such a friendly, cheerful
little boy and so popular among all the children. He would join in
everything and was undoubtedly a clever boy.
"Everyone’s thoughts at St Clare’s are with his family at this desperately sad time,"
John-Paul’s brother Craig was also a former pupil at the school.
