PostSubject: how to learn your dogs to go tacks   Mon Jan 26, 2009 10:10 am

    Basic:
Learn your dog to have his/hers nose to the ground.
Do this by playing at the ground with a kong or another favorite toy... remember...the kong or the favorite toy shall always touch the ground. And when the dog finds out at there is also something funny going on at the ground you can take thing you`re playing with and fasten it to a leash (a long leash or trackleash). Now you need anoter person to help you on the next step...

You put the toy f.eks in front of a housecorner and bring you dog and stand there so the dog can see the objeckt...while person 2 hide around the housecorner starting to pull slowly....as your dog watch it...
When the objeck is no longer in sight, the person 2 goes some meters to hide the objeckt and him self ( 10 - 20 meters).
Now you can start to go and let the dog go the track...but only if the dog has its nose to the ground.
If it dosen`t has it on the ground...you wait... and than when the dog understand it you are on your way
:-). Each time the dog take his nose up....STOP... even if the dog has localized it by the wind... the dog shall not be reward by the quickly solution..so wait until the nose is back to the ground... and then you and you dog keep going the track...
And when you`re come to the end and find the object.....IT IS CHRISTMAS EVE AND NEW YEAR are te same time...PLAY and be happy:-) And the dog thinks "ohhh...this was so funny, lets do do it again :san12: "

Afrer now that the dog understand what to do..you stretch the time of the track both in distance and time before you and your dogs goes it.

You can also put objekct in the track that the dog shall mark..either by take it up and bring it to you or the dog can have a lie down mark by the object....

By learning them to bring back you can start in the livingroom... you hold the object in front of the dog... when the dog puts his nose to it..give him reward, than when he tries to put it in his mouth..give him reward...and when he has it in his mouth..reward.... and to learn that he shall hold the objekt you reward when you say "let go" than he drop it.... I never reward his hold....but I reward his let go..than you can get a dog that can hold the obcekct in his mouth for a very long time .

By learning lie down mark you can use a small box with treats it.... just give the dog treats when he lies down on the ground ( you have the box on the ground) and suddenly the dogs down that the only way he will gets treat is by to lie down.... ohh..what a clever dog :san12: .

When the dog understand what to to...you can take this outside an keep generalize it outdoor and into the forrest... with bring it back and lie down mark..

And there is also one other thing that is importent.... when you start to train your dogs... train them on a little wet field... the tracks are sitting best there... but not in pouring rain..then the tracks is cleaning away.

well..this is a start...but if you are wondering about something..just ask

and sorry for my english :2445:

it really fun for both you and the dogs to go track.... since I have taken Heidi out of search and rescue, we will start to compete again... in tracks and obedience... she loves it... last year we came 3th at our first competition.... and our next we came first...some this is really something she loves...

How that you all try this
