PostSubject: Hero police rescue dog to retire   Mon May 04, 2009 4:12 pm

Jake won awards for his bravery during his time with Northumbria Police

A hero police dog who saved a woman's life has been forced to retire from the force due to ill health.

Jake, a former rescue dog, was praised after sniffing out a
missing woman who lay unconscious under bushes in South Shields in
    2007.

But at the age of four, ill health has forced Jake into early retirement.

He was taken in by officers after he was found tied to a lamppost
with youths throwing fireworks at him when he was just seven weeks old.

He will retire to the home of a police constable who is stationed in South Tyneside.

His handler, Pc Alistair Cairnie-Coates, said: "I've been a dog
handler for 11 years and I have never had a dog like Jake, he was an
    excellent street dog.

"You just knew, when you were out on shift, he was going to look after you."

Jake was taken in by Northumbria Police and passed out as a fully-fledged police dog just before his first birthday.

Since then, he has worked alongside Pc Cairnie-Coates, patrolling
the streets of South Tyneside, making his last arrest in December,
    after tackling a bottle-wielding burglar.
