| Ok my 19 month old Terv has a new habbit that I am keen to discourage. Can you suggest a way to stop him please? He has started going up to joggers while we are out on our walks and giving them a *wedgie* ( sorry if this is too crude a discription but I don't know how else to describe what he does). He goes up behind them and gently (yes gently) sticks his nose up you know where - I've started recalling him to me when I see a jogger but I would prefer him to just not do it. His nose is at just the right height too!! :2431: Can anyone help me? Many thanks Superterv's Mum Sori |

| :2431: :san42: :san42: :san42: well better then wat my malinois would do eh i would suggest re training a good recall hun and not letting him off untill it is spot on and then wen it is let him off if you see a jogger recall and reward then as they have past let him off wen he does it i would correct him tho and make sure he knows its not acceptable lol |

| He has a wonderful recall, thats not the problem, it just if I can't see a jogger coming and they appear round a corner or such like. |

| i would say from a dog training point of view tho hun the recal is not strong enough other wise no matter what he would come back
example for what i do with my workers, the thing they want most in the world is that guy in the bite suite lol we send them after the guy but we then recall them off and our dogs come back in a instant. so even tho to them the bite is the biggest reward they get they know if they come back the reward will be even higher does that make sence.
so your lad may have a great recall wen there are normal stimulus about but wen joggers are about they are a high reward to him so he wont listen to you as you have nothing in return for him thats beats sniffing someones ass lol
so you need to become the most important thing to him in order to combat it, but if he keeps learning he can get away from you and be rewarded for it hes in effect self rewarding himself so doesnt need you. so thats were re-training the recall comes in and getting it more solid x |

| I think I'm not explaining things properly . 2's recall is 100%, he will recall from an inch away from a person or even mid sniff. The problem I guess is me - if I don't see the jogger until its too late (if they are coming from behind, or from round a corner). Its not as though 2 will go far from me (30 ft is about as far as he goes), but I don't have eyes in the back of my head to see joggers approaching from behind me (they move faster than I do). Anyway maybe this has explained things a bit better - I don't want to have to lead walk my dog all the time - its not fair on him. I am limited to where I can walk him (access issues as I am disabled and use a mobility scooter). Forgive me for not explaining more clearly the first time. Sori |

| Dogs dont have to go offlead, I dont allow mine off when they decide to ignore me. They have to earn the right, if they cant behave appropriately, they stay on lead by my side and a few weeks later we will try again. |

| So the answer is to keep him on a lead - that's not teaching him anything though is it? Hopefully its just a phase.. Maybe I should just campaign for all joggers to wear a bell so I can hear them coming Sori |

| the answer isnt to keep him on lead but if you dont have the correct control under the DDA you are actually commiting a offence so if a jogger doesnt like dogs and tervs are not a small breed. then you could get into trouble
if like you say you have 100% recall well done i mean even mine are not 100% and they are working dogs but he is still doing it so the answer would be to train him to stop doing this.
so how you ask well if he was mine he would be put on the lead untill he learns not to run off after joggers and then wen hes got it in his head it is unacceptable behaviour for which he will not be rewarded then and only then off lead by joggers.
but by keeping him off lead hes only learning how little control you do have and self rewarding at the same time hence the behaviour he displays. so you need to become no1 in his wold and more intresting like i said b4 so get a fave toy and do some work with that
what training have you done with him? does his have a fave toy h plays with, with you? |
