| i was just reading a post on brens thread about getting kiera to leave her ball... this is a very very big problem we have with fred the only time we manage to throw his ball is when i get it out of my bag when we first get to the field or if he drops it for a wee and i get to it before he does, which isnt very often, he will follow us as were walking constantly nudging my hand so i take hold of the rope on the ball, then im dragging him around the field or he likes to trot beside me!!... i have tried the 2 ball method i have tried the treat method, he will not drop that ball, ive even tried prizing his mouth open, i got the ball out but then got my fingers clamped lol... he did let go immediately as soon as he realised my fingers werent the ball!! i get him to sit, down wait and he still will not drop the ball no mater what i do!!! he used to be brilliant at leaving the ball, and then he suddenly decided he wasnt going to leave it anymore _________________ ~The dog is a gentleman! | I grab hold of the ball in their mouth and "claim it" for myself. Hold it with an attitude of "Its mine" until they let go. I dont tend to speak until they get the message, then later on when I know they are about to let go, I add the command "leave" so they get used to the sound that goes with the action. Hope this makes sense. Mimi can be a bugger for not letting go if shes in a mood too so we go "back to basics" and do it this way until she "leaves" as soon as I say so. |

| i agree with paula too
but if he was mine i wouldnt let him have the ball its his game he takes the ball doesnt give you it back then gets you to play with him with the rope end *thats how he sees it anyway lol*
i would work on this on lead not off lead as you have less control and practise in the house first |

| Keira knows the leave it command but runs away from me if i try to get the ball out of her mouth She does eventually drop the ball but sometimes when i go to pick it up she just has to snatch it up again and run off Its the only thing she doesnt like sharing If she does it too many times i do take the ball and put it in my pocket for the rest of the walk |

| right when we got to the field today i decided not to give fred his ball, instead i held it where he could see it ,and kept telling him to leave it every time he grabbed for it, i kept him on his lead and he was dancing whining barking and jumping about after his ball for a good 5 mins before he gave up lol... we walked all round the field, fred still on his lead before i decided to let him off..i made him sit, give paw, down and leave the ball while im swinging it in front of his face... then i threw it for him... he came back and i managed to wrestle the ball off him, and say leave when i had it! we had a sort of success lol... i would say sit then leave and he would drop it but dive for it before i could get it lol! we went through this a few times before i put my foot on it and got it, then threw it again. after a while he played up again and wouldnt let me have it, we both started getting grumpy so i called it a day re-leashed him and we came home, where he will drop his ball at the gate without even being told lol _________________ ~The dog is a gentleman!
