PostSubject: getting a dog to leave   Sun Mar 08, 2009 9:16 pm

i was just reading a post on brens thread about getting kiera to leave her ball...

this is a very very big problem we have with fred the only time we manage to throw his ball is when i get it out of my bag when we first get to the field or if he drops it for a wee and i get to it before he does, which isnt very often, he will follow us as were walking constantly nudging my hand so i take hold of the rope on the ball, then im dragging him around the field or he likes to trot beside me!!...

i have tried the 2 ball method i have tried the treat method, he will not drop that ball, ive even tried prizing his mouth open, i got the ball out but then got my fingers clamped lol... he did let go immediately as soon as he realised my fingers werent the ball!! i get him to sit, down wait and he still will not drop the ball no mater what i do!!!

he used to be brilliant at leaving the ball, and then he suddenly decided he wasnt going to leave it anymore

I grab hold of the ball in their mouth and "claim it" for myself. Hold it with an attitude of "Its mine" until they let go. I dont tend to speak until they get the message, then later on when I know they are about to let go, I add the command "leave" so they get used to the sound that goes with the action. Hope this makes sense.

Mimi can be a bugger for not letting go if shes in a mood too so we go "back to basics" and do it this way until she "leaves" as soon as I say so.

    i agree with paula too

but if he was mine i wouldnt let him have the ball its his game he takes the ball doesnt give you it back then gets you to play with him with the rope end *thats how he sees it anyway lol*

i would work on this on lead not off lead as you have less control and practise in the house first

Keira knows the leave it command but runs away from me if i try to get the ball out of her mouth She does eventually drop the ball but sometimes when i go to pick it up she just has to snatch it up again and run off Its the only thing she doesnt like sharing If she does it too many times i do take the ball and put it in my pocket for the rest of the walk

ive tried it faz, in the house he is brill, he leaves when told and will sit and wait till i throw it for him, and in te garden too he will fetch and leave for hours, its just once we get to the field he will not leave it!! ive ignored him and not played his game, he just runs about and doesnt bother!!...

right when we got to the field today i decided not to give fred his ball, instead i held it where he could see it ,and kept telling him to leave it every time he grabbed for it, i kept him on his lead and he was dancing whining barking and jumping about after his ball for a good 5 mins before he gave up lol... we walked all round the field, fred still on his lead before i decided to let him off..i made him sit, give paw, down and leave the ball while im swinging it in front of his face... then i threw it for him... he came back and i managed to wrestle the ball off him, and say leave when i had it! we had a sort of success lol... i would say sit then leave and he would drop it but dive for it before i could get it lol! we went through this a few times before i put my foot on it and got it, then threw it again. after a while he played up again and wouldnt let me have it, we both started getting grumpy so i called it a day re-leashed him and we came home, where he will drop his ball at the gate without even being told lol
